Another handy shortcut for working with web addresses is to type
only the name of the web site you want to visit, and then press Ctrl-
Enter to add the http://www. to the beginning and the .com to the end
of the name. For example, if you entered
yahoo, you could press Ctrl-
Enter to create the address http://www.yahoo.com. You could then
press Enter to browse to this address.
Searching the Web and Setting Search Providers
Internet Explorer 7 integrates a search feature directly into the browser window. To
search the Web using the default search provider, click in the Web Search box, type
your search text, and then press Enter or click the Search button. If you hold Alt
while pressing Enter, you’ll open the search in a new tab.
On most configurations of Internet Explorer 7, the default search provider is Live
Search. Live Search is a search service provided by Microsoft, and not surprisingly, it
has the most extensive search listings I’ve found anywhere—Google and Yahoo!
included. You can add search providers to Internet Explorer 7 by following these
steps:
1. In Internet Explorer 7, click the Search Options button to the right of the Search
button.
2. On the shortcut menu, select Find More Providers.
3. On the Add Search Providers to Internet Explorer 7 page, you’ll find a list of
search providers. Click the search provider you want to add. This displays the
Add Search Provider dialog box shown in Figure 7-7.
Add search providers only from sites you trust. Just because a site is
listed as a provider, it doesn’t mean the site is trustworthy or reliable.
It simply means the site has built-in search facilities and the site owner
sent Microsoft a provider file that can use those built-in search facilities.
4. To make the search provider your default for web searches, select the “Make this
my default search provider” checkbox.
5. Click Add Provider.
You can have only one default search provider. If you make a particular provider
your default, you’ll use this provider anytime you type search text and then press
Enter or click the Search button. To use an alternative search provider, type your
search text, click the Search Options button, and then select the alternative provider.

2. On the shortcut menu, select Change Search Defaults.
3. In the Change Search Defaults dialog box, shown in Figure 7-8, you’ll find a list
of search providers you’ve configured for use.
4. To make a provider the default, click the provider in the Search Providers list
and then click Set Default.
5. To remove a provider, click the provider in the Search Providers list and then
click Remove.
