The emergence of consumer smartphones such as the iPhone brought about a shift in corporate strategy with regard to employees’ personal devices. It soon became clear that employees would much prefer to access their business email accounts from their own smartphones.

This initially wasn’t a big problem for IT departments, because applicable secure technologies already existed, such as Outlook Web Access and Exchange Active Sync (EAS).
