One problem with technologies aimed at consumers is that developers often overestimate the general public’s technical literacy. For example, when it comes to Wi-Fi security, it’s a good bet that few members of the public understand the difference between Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP), Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), and Lightweight Extensible Authentication Protocol (LEAP)—let alone understand the implications of not understanding. As a result, despite warnings about potential hacks on unprotected wireless systems, many access points remain unprotected or use outdated security protocols.
