One of the reasons that you can experience either poor signal coverage or slower speeds even in good signal coverage is that the wireless signal is being degraded. This means that although the wireless router is sending out a clear and strong signal, something is causing the signal quality to diminish by the time it reaches your wireless NIC (and vice versa).
