Women's alternative print journalism of the ‘second’ and ‘third’ waves

Liberation politics during the counter-cultural period of the 1960s emphasized ‘personal liberation’ from the repressive structures of society and therefore produced at best an ambiguous and unfocused politics around femininity and women's issues. Likewise, much of the so-called alternative or counter-cultural journalism in the 1960s in the UK and the US ignored women as such. British periodicals like It, Oz and Frendz, and US publications such as the Rat and the Village Voice rarely addressed women.
