ConclusionWOMEN, JOURNALISM AND NEW MEDIA
In both the United States and Britain, the institution and profession of journalism has been structured by gender. This chapter begins by summarizing some of the ways in which gender has been deployed both to block or limit women's entry into the profession and yet also to afford certain kinds of opportunities for women. Much debate in media studies now centres on the rise of new interactive media and the Internet's potential for bringing into being an interactive audience. We ask how the Internet and on-line journalism may affect women both in newsrooms and in terms of their relationship to public discourse.
