Working with a Page

No matter what method is used to create a page, the same techniques are used to modify the page and add items to it. For the most part, Word’s standard tools are used to format text and insert objects. However, there are some differences in using the tools on a web page.

Web Layout View

Word automatically switches the document to Web Layout view after creating a document from a web page template or the Web Wizard. Even when creating a page from scratch, Web Layout is the best view to use because it represents text the way it will appear in a web browser — not exactly the same, but close enough. In Web Layout, Word ignores formatting that doesn’t apply to web pages, such as page breaks, margins, and tab stops. Web Layout view is also covered in Chapter 6.

Preview Web Pages in a Browser

Use File Web Page Preview to save the current document as a temporary file and open it in the default browser on your system. This gives a good idea of what the page will actually look like. For an even better idea, save the page and open it in different browsers.

Formatting Text

Word provides a number of good ways to format text on a web page:

Use Word’s standard formatting commands

Use Format Font and Format Paragraph to apply formatting the same way as in a normal Word document. These commands are detailed in Chapter 8.
