Creating a Blank Document

When you start Word, the program opens by default with the Start screen (New!) on the Backstage, where you can open a new document so that you can begin working in it. If you’re already working in Word, you can use the New command (New!) on the File tab to create a new document. Each new document displays a default name—such as “Document1,” “Document2” and so on—numbered according to how many new documents you have started during the work session until you save it with a more meaningful name. The document name appears on the title bar and taskbar buttons.
