Because of the popularity of WordPress, many bloggers decide to move their blogs to WordPress. Depending on the blog publishing platform they are currently using, this can be a simple task or it can be extremely complex.

WordPress provides support for importing data from a variety of platforms via plugins. In versions of WordPress prior to WordPress 3.0, import functionality was built directly into WordPress, but this functionality was moved to plugins to streamline and focus the core codebase.

Importers for all of the popular platforms are available, including importers for Blogger, Movable Type, and TypePad. The WordPress importer utilizes the WordPress export file format (WXR), is an extensible markup language (XML) file containing all of the data related to a WordPress blog.

In this chapter, I discuss how to move a blog into WordPress from six blogging platforms: Blogger, Blogware, DotClear, LiveJournal, Movable Type, and TypePad. I also discuss the importance of backing up your blog (and cannot stress enough the importance of this) and offer two reliable backup routines.
