Because of the popularity of WordPress, many bloggers decide to move their blogs to WordPress. Depending on the blog publishing platform they are currently using, this can be a simple task or it can be extremely complex.
WordPress includes a number of bundled importers you can use to import a blog from a third-party blog host. Importers for all of the popular platforms are included, including importers for Blogger, Movable Type, and TypePad. The ideal off-the-shelf solution for importing a blog into WordPress, however, is to use the WordPress export file format (WXR), which is an extensible markup language (XML) file containing all of the data related to a WordPress blog.
In this chapter I discuss how to move a blog into WordPress from six blogging platforms: Blogger, Blogware, DotClear, LiveJournal, Moveable Type, and TypePad. I also discuss the importance of backing up your blog (and cannot stress enough the importance of this) and offer two reliable backup routines.
