Installing WordPress Plugins via the Dashboard

This section takes you through the steps of searching for, downloading, installing, and activating free plugins in your WordPress Dashboard.

Finding free plugins

WordPress makes finding plugins in the Dashboard pretty easy. Choose PluginsAdd New to open the Install Plugins page, as shown in Figure 16-1. You have a number of selections, including a search box. Typing a term in this box and clicking the Search Plugins button searches WordPress for plugins that match the term.

For example, I entered All in One SEO Pack in the search box and then clicked the Search Plugins button. The Search Results tab in Figure 16-2 appeared.

At the top of the Install Plugins page, you find links for the following tabs:

check.png Search: The tab where you can search for plugins within the repository. This is the default view, shown in Figure 16-1.

check.png Search Results: The tab that appears after you have searched for a plugin using the search form. It displays the search results for your chosen keyword (see Figure 16-2).

check.png Upload: This tab provides you with a means to upload a plugin directly into WordPress.
