India has at last joined the ‘World VAT Club’
VAT can also be called a Very Apt Tax. It must be so, as it is used successfully in 130 countries round the world. Its rates and working in some other countries are interesting for you to compare its effects in India. VAT is not being suddenly introduced in India but it has always been paid as excise duty for many decades. In its new form, it has taken around ten years since it first appeared as MODVAT. It can also be called a Very Apt Tax because it benefits everybody.
