The CPUs from the Intel/AMD 80x86 and IBM/Motorola PowerPC families are the most popular CPUs found in personal computer systems and game consoles today. As such, more applications are written for these two CPU families than for any other. Although other processor families, such as MIPS and ARM, are quite popular in embedded systems, the majority of software applications are written for 80x86 or PowerPC CPUs.
