The building blocks of natural language rule statements

The phrase ‘natural language rule statement’ is rather cumbersome; so, from this point on in this book, any reference to ‘rule statement’ should be taken to mean ‘natural language rule statement’.

Each rule statement is a sentence in a natural language (English in the case of all the examples in the book). It therefore consists of words of various types (or word classes): nouns, verbs, etc. Depending on when and where you went to school, you may be well-versed in English grammar, in which case you may want to skip this section and move straight to Chapter 6, or you may need an introduction to (or refresh of) how these word classes can be used.
