Chapter 5. Adding Sound

You’ve been developing your sensibilities for sound for longer than you can remember. Before you were born, you listened to your mother’s heartbeat. As your mother’s heartbeat quickened or slowed, you began to understand rhythm, beat, pitch, loudness, and softness. Whatever sounds your mother liked and disliked she shared with you. If she listened to classical music, you felt the slow, soothing or high and frenetic vibrations pass through your mother’s body. If she sighed, you heard that, too. You heard the rush of air when she took a sharp breath. Maybe your mother sang lullabies to you while you were in the crib. Maybe you had an aunt who liked to rap.
