I was sitting in a café in Indonesia, reading an old Australian newspaper when I happened upon an extraordinary article about a Papuan farmer who took his critically injured niece on an epic journey across New Guinea for medical help. While the article was short and placed well below the fold, I was immediately struck and soon obsessed by it. I quickly discovered the entirety of what the world knew of Iambi Pisau, the Papuan farmer, was contained in that half-page article. Nothing more. Yet, in that article, I saw the outlines of his journey. What I didn’t know was that writing would be a journey for me, as well.
