As sound design has grown over the last several decades, the lines between music and sound design are being blurred in contemporary scoring. Sound design is used by composers to change the emotional intensity of a level and to add diversity to the palette of instruments, thereby enhancing the originality of a score. In this chapter we’ll explore how composers have used sound design elements in their music in the practice of scoring video games. We’ll introduce several easy techniques to create musical sound design and discuss ways to use interactive techniques with sound design to augment the experience of playing the level.
