The lpr or lp command prints PostScript files. Other commands are needed to translate and print other kinds of files.

The way to print a PostScript file on your system depends on what kind of UNIX system you have. On System V-derived systems, use the lp command:

% lp chapter1.ps

On BSD-derived systems, use the lpr command:

% lpr chapter1.ps

The lp or lpr command sends the file directly to the print spooler. Since the file is already in PostScript, it does not need to be translated before it can be sent to the printer. When printing a file in any other format, the computer needs to first convert it into PostScript and then call lpr or lp.
