Be aware of your resources.

It’s dangerous when system administrators start lecturing about system resources, because users might think they should use the computer as little as possible. Although cutting back on use can be a good temporary strategy when conditions are particularly bad, it’s not the philosophy to permanently embrace.

Think of the computer’s resources as any other resource, such as tap water. Your tap water comes from a reservoir that has a limited amount of water in it. When there’s a drought, you should stop sprinkling your lawn or taking long showers. But even when there isn’t a drought, you don’t leave the bathtub running all day.

It’s the same idea with computer resources. Don’t treat them like they’re endless, because they aren’t. You don’t have to act like there’s a drought all the time, but you should still treat your resources with respect.
