Instruments is a framework for software-measurement tools called...instruments. (Uppercase-I Instruments is the application, lowercase-i instruments are components of the Instruments application.) The analogy is to a multitrack recording deck. Instruments records activity into tracks (one per instrument), building the data on a timeline like audio on a tape.
