Converting from Sage to Xero

This appendix provides guidance for exporting data from the UK’s Sage 50 suite of accounting products and preparing it for importing into Xero. Data can be exported from Sage by running reports containing relevant data, saving them as CSV files and manipulating them for importing into Xero.

If you’re working on an older product than the Sage 50 suite, the instructions given in this appendix should still work to some extent. The buttons or steps may have slightly changed, however.

Note: Before exporting data and preparing it for import, you first need to create a file directory for the different file versions of the data. Refer to Chapter 3 for more on this, and for an example naming system for this file directory. I’ve continued using the same example naming system from Chapter 3 through this appendix.

Exporting Data

The following sections outline how you can start exporting data from Sage.

Chart of accounts

In Sage 50, the chart of accounts can be extracted by running a nominal ledger report and exporting the information to Excel. Follow these steps to extract the chart of accounts from your Sage 50 Accounts:

1. From the home page of Sage 50 Accounts, click on the word Company on the bottom left of the screen.

The Nominal Ledger appears on the screen to the right.

2. Click on every line to be imported into Xero.

As you click, they turn blue. If you are importing all lines, they all need to turn blue.
