IANA (Internet Assigned Number Authority)

Authority responsible for assigning default port numbers to common applications on the Internet. Also responsible for character set identifiers, and the current list can be accessed from ftp://ftp.isi.edu/in-notes/iana/assignments/languages (the procedure for proposing a new variant is described in RFC 1766.
