At the time we were conducting these evaluations, the public discussion of comparing XML data management approaches was poor. Most work was done in the field of semi-structured data, where database management systems and query languages were developed. The first publications that explored the role of relational database systems in storing and retrieving XML documents were presented by researchers from INRIA (Florescu and Kossmann 1999b) and from the University of Wisconsin (Shanmugasundaram et al. 1999).
