XML and Data Engineering

Introduction

This chapter describes the intersection between XML and data engineering, pictured in Figure 4.1.. We believe that the area of overlap is large, and this permits speculation about leveraging investments. The short lesson to take away from this chapter is that organizations must simultaneously consider reengineering their data structures as they prepare their data for use in an XML environment. Before embarking on XML-related initiatives, organizations should ensure that the maturity of their DM practices is sufficient to implement the concepts described in this chapter.
