Knowledge representation technology addresses the structure and meaning of knowledge, answering the following questions.

  • How is metadata, domain knowledge, or any other kind of knowledge to be represented? [Davis and Shrobe 1993]

  • What mechanisms can be used to facilitate the acquisition, encoding, and storage of knowledge to allow both general access and rich expressivity? [Glaser 1996; Speel 1996a]

  • What inference or other reasoning methods can be efficiently performed on that represented knowledge? How are they in turn represented to guarantee correctness and completeness? [Brewka 1996]
