Chapter 2, "Modeling Data: Document Type Definitions (DTD) and Schemas," covered the basics of the XML Schema technology and its relationship to DTDs, so I don't want to spend much time on the conceptual aspects of XML Schema. However, it is worth putting XML Schema into perspective with the initiatives of the W3C because there is a lot of work underway to bring about an advanced schema technology for XML. I also want to brush up on the basics of why schemas are important to the future of XML.
