Beyond HTML Linking
Simply based on the power and usefulness of the Web, it's hard to make an argument against HTML's simplistic approach to linking documents. However, there are many ways in which it can be improved, some of which you might never have thought about.
For one, it would be nice if links were bidirectional so you wouldn't be dependent on a browser's Back button to go back to a previous resource. Although this may seem trivial, it could be extremely useful to traverse a link in either direction, thereby eliminating the need for fixed source and target resources. A bidirectional link would treat the two resources as both sources and targets.
