The WIDL spec was written by webMethods and describes a grammar that they developed for their B2B middleware server line. The syntax of the DOM used before is a syntax that operates with their middleware.
There is nothing to stop a programmer from writing his own middleware, of course. And as the WIDL syntax has been made public, there is nothing to stop the programmer from using a WIDL file to drive the middleware. If necessary, a programmer could develop his own syntax to drive the middleware. What is important is the principle behind the transaction[md]namely, that there is an interface definition language between the Web and your VB application (see Figure 24.8).
