SMIL and HTML+TIME

Before you start thinking that SMIL is the absolute bottom line when it comes to synchronized media on the Web, allow me to muddy the water a little. Microsoft has been pushing a similar technology called HTML+TIME that offers many of the same benefits as SMIL. HTML+TIME is an extension of HTML that allows you to specify the timing parameters of any element of a Web page. This is in contrast to SMIL, which supports the specification of timing parameters for media objects within a given SMIL presentation. Microsoft has expressed concerns over this seeming limitation of SMIL, which is why it was pivotal in developing HTML+TIME.
