The Significance of Structured Vector Graphics

Most of the graphics on the Web today are in a bitmap format, such as GIF or JPEG. Bitmap graphics formats describe the individual rectangular pixels that make up an image. Although bitmap graphics are great for scanned images, such as photographs, they take up lots of space and are slow to transfer over the Internet. Additionally, it is difficult to get high-quality results when scaling or transforming a bitmap. This is because bitmaps don't maintain any information about the structure of an image, other than the raw pixel information. There is no way to transform bitmaps so that they retain a crisp look.
