6A Word About Fear
The fastest Winter Olympic sledding event, the luge, involves an athlete (a luger) lying down on his or her back on a stripped-down sled and hurtling down an icy mountain, navigating hairpin turns at speeds sometimes as high as 90 mph. This sport definitely is not like taking your childhood sled to the park on a snowy afternoon! The prospect is scary enough as it is, even for a trained athlete. But add to that the pressure of competing with other top athletes for the Gold, and you really have a recipe for fear. For you and that luger on top of the mountain, there are two ways to go: Face your fear and fly down the mountain, or pick up your sled and go home.
