Drowning amid Uncertainty
It’s 1:00 p.m. Emily has just finished lunch with Rick, the operations manager, and Carl, the company’s finance director. The polite chatter about vacation plans is over and it’s time for Emily to present her plan for a new conference. In her old job, she had a predefined budget and would execute a series of well-codified steps, involving getting sponsors, organizing speakers, and arranging marketing. In her new role, she creates these budgets and oversees others who run the conference. Her objective is to design three new conferences, create budgets for them, and then beat these budgets. New conferences also have to be “sold” to other leaders in her organization. That’s the purpose of this lunch.
