Maintain forward momentum and motivation

Dr. Gabija Toleikyte, PhD, has studied the brain extensively and I was excited to speak to her about the scientific reasons that we sometimes hold back or lack momentum, even when we know what we’d like to achieve. A lot of my clients recognize their tendency to self-sabotage, or to lose momentum and lack self-belief, and one of the reasons for this, I learned, can stem from our brains trying to keep us safe from perceived danger. She said:

There’s a part of the brain called the amygdala—which is pretty much there to protect us from danger—and it’s really ancient, in that dogs, cats, cows and rodents have very similar amygdalas.
