ONE OF THE FIRST TASKS in planning your leadership legacy is to figure out, to the extent that you can, the kinds of legacies you are seeding now. Where are you having an impact on others’ behavior or views at work? How is someone doing something differently as a result of working with you? Can you locate the influence you might be having on your immediate peers, your direct reports, and the employees who work for you outside the inner circle? Are the images in the photomosaic forming a portrait you recognize?
