17Put Your Negotiation Skills to Work

I am going to begin and end this chapter discussing personal values as they impact negotiation. You’ve seen (and I hope interacted with) the Discover Your Personal Values exercises I’ve included throughout this book. It’s important that you use these skills for the good of yourself and others.

You can’t know what your terms are until you know what your personal values are.

Negotiation skills in and of themselves are neutral, like any tool. It’s how they are used that makes the difference. You can negotiate for money, fame, and power; for education, cooperation, and relationship-building; or for circumstances that unintentionally ruin someone’s life.
