Chapter 5

RF Propagation, Antennas, and Regulatory Requirements

Understanding the propagation characteristics of an environment is essential in properly implementing and troubleshooting wireless networks. This chapter covers the fundamentals of RF propagation, range estimation, and range improvement techniques. Basic characteristics of antennas are also reviewed because selection of the antenna can have a considerable impact on the overall performance, range, and size of a wireless node. Local governments issue regulations to help maintain wireless communication system integrity and product performance in their regions. Regulatory requirements in North America, Europe, and Japan are summarized at the end of this chapter.
