Infrastructure & Ops Superstream: Linux Fundamentals
Published by O'Reilly Media, Inc.
Compared to other operating systems, Linux gives you complete control and better visibility, allowing you to create more efficient and more secure systems. And the Linux kernel is key to many of the new technologies changing the way software is deployed. Join us for a deep dive into how to best work with Linux and what to expect from this operating system in the future.
About the Infrastructure & Ops Superstream Series: This four-part Superstream series guides you through what you need to know about modernizing your organization’s infrastructure and operations, with each event day covering different topics and lasting no more than four hours. They’re packed with the expert insights, skills, and tools that will help you effectively manage existing legacy systems while migrating to modern, scalable, cost-effective infrastructures—with no interruption to your business.
What you’ll learn and how you can apply it
- Learn why the Linux kernel is key to many of the new technologies changing the way software is deployed
- Understand how to harness the power of Linux for your own products
This live event is for you because...
- You’re a developer who wants to learn more about the many programs and products that run on Linux.
- You want to better understand why Linux is so important (and why you should learn it).
- You want to find out how to get up and running with eBPF.
Prerequisites
- Come with your questions
- Have a pen and paper handy to capture notes, insights, and inspiration
Recommended follow-up:
- Read Efficient Linux at the Command Line (book)
- Read Learning Modern Linux (book)
- Explore Linux Fundamentals (video course)
- Read What Is eBPF? (report)
- Read Raspberry Pi Cookbook, fourth edition (early release book)
Schedule
The time frames are only estimates and may vary according to how the class is progressing.
Sam Newman: Introduction (5 minutes) - 2:00am PT | 5:00am ET | 9:00am UTC/GMT
- Sam Newman welcomes you to the Infrastructure & Ops Superstream.
Simon Monk: Raspberry Pi and Embedded Hardware—The Power of Linux (45 minutes) - 2:05am PT | 5:05am ET | 9:05am UTC/GMT
- Originally intended as an educational device, the Raspberry Pi is finding itself embedded in loads of different products. Join Simon Monk to explore Raspberry Pi basics and the history of this tool, then discover how people are using this low-cost credit-card-sized computer operated by Linux to do huge things—from Pi as embedded hardware (GPIO pins, Pi Zero, Pi Compute, etc.) and Linux on embedded hardware (headless operation) to Pi for computer vision and Pi for ML to the Pi Pico and more.
- Simon Monk has a degree in cybernetics and computer science and a PhD in software engineering. After spending many years in software and cofounding the mobile software company Momote, he now divides his time between writing books about electronics and programming (including the Raspberry Pi Cookbook, now in its fourth edition) and designing products for MonkMakes, a business he started with his wife, Linda, that manufactures electronic kits and accessories for the Raspberry Pi, BBC micro:bit, and general electronics.
- Break (5 minutes)
Saiyam Pathak: Let's Learn Talos, a Modern Linux OS for Kubernetes (45 minutes) - 2:55am PT | 5:55am ET | 9:55am UTC/GMT
- Talos is a modern OS based on Linux that’s designed to be secure, immutable, and minimal. All system management is done via an API, and there’s no shell or interactive console. Join Saiyam Pathak to learn why Talos came into existence and how it can help you manage your Kubernetes clusters.
- Saiyam Pathak is director of technical evangelism at Civo, where he focuses on defining the Civo cloud platform for simplifying Kubernetes and making it accessible for developers. Previously, Saiyam helped implement Kubernetes solutions at Walmart Labs, Oracle, and HP. He’s worked on many facets of Kubernetes, including its machine learning platform, scaling, multicloud, managed services, and documentation. When not coding, Saiyam contributes to the community by writing blogs and organizing local meetups for Kubernetes and the CNCF. He’s also a CNCF Ambassador and the founder of Kubesimplify. You can reach him on Twitter at @saiyampathak.
- Break (5 minutes)
Tameika Reed: Why You Need to Learn Linux (45 minutes) - 3:45am PT | 6:45am ET | 10:45am UTC/GMT
- Being able to write code is enough to get started with a tech career. But to really advance (and to master cloud, security, and embedded systems), you need Linux. Better yet, as jobs are lost to automation and AI-written code, you can look to Linux as a way to future-proof your skills and build a career in infrastructure. Tameika Reed is the founder of the nonprofit Women In Linux, which teaches people from underrepresented groups in tech how to level up their career with Linux. Tamika shares insights from her journey and her work with Women in Linux and explains how you too can learn the skills you need to work with the systems supported by Linux.
- Tameika Reed is the founder of Women In Linux (WIL). Since the launch of WIL, Tameika leads initiatives that offer participants a chance to explore careers in infrastructure, cybersecurity, DevOps, IOT, leadership, and continuous skill building. As a self-taught system administrator, Tameika believes the best way to learn tech is by just diving in.
- Break (5 minutes)
Lin Sun: Build, Run, and Share Your First eBPF Program in 5 Minutes (45 minutes) - 4:35am PT | 7:35am ET | 11:35am UTC/GM
- If you’re familiar with Kubernetes custom resources or custom Envoy filters, you know how important it is to be able to extend and customize your infrastructure to meet the specific challenges of your organization. The Extended Berkeley Packet Filter (eBPF) enables developers to extend and customize the Linux kernel to quickly build performant and feature-rich functions based on their business needs. Interested? Join Lin Sun for a crash course on eBPF, using the new open source project BumbleBee (in the process of being donated to the CNCF). You’ll explore how to build, run, and share your eBPF programs with ease—five minutes is all you need to expose rich observability data directly from the Linux kernel.
- Lin Sun is the director of open source at Solo.io and a CNCF ambassador. She’s worked on the Istio service mesh since 2017 and serves on the Istio Technical Oversight Committee and Steering Committee. Previously, she was a senior member of the technical staff and a Master Inventor at IBM for 15+ years. She’s the author of Istio Explained and has more than 200 patents to her name.
Sam Newman: Closing Remarks (5 minutes) - 5:20am PT | 8:20am ET | 12:20pm UTC/GMT
- Sam Newman closes out today’s event.
