Projects are messy. In spite of decades of research and continuous focus on improving project results, many projects struggle to deliver what was promised. All too often scope is decided before you are asked to lead a project, which can lead to chaos. This course will help you to learn strategies to help you lead through these inevitable challenges in order to successfully deliver agreed objectives, on time and on schedule.

This course is geared toward project focused professionals, from individual consultants to program leaders. At the end of this course, the professional will walk away with practical strategies for project success in spite of these all too common challenges, and they will know how to apply their learning to increase their value contribution in their job.

The small-group exercises for this course will be facilitated in collaborative Google Docs. Google Docs access is not required but is strongly recommended to get the benefit of full participation in the small-group exercises. About your instructor

  • Andy Bouts has more than 17 years of experience in managing and leading projects. With significant time spent abroad delivering projects in 18 countries during a four-year span of his career, he has considerable cross-cultural work experience. Andy is currently a Senior Solutions Architect at the SAS Institute, previously he was a Senior Program Manager at SAS. At SAS, he was the engagement leader for the Financial Services Business Unit ensuring excellent delivery for many of SAS’ largest banking clients. He also served as a lead consultant and program manager for North American and European cybersecurity-based software projects. Andy has taught Project Management courses for the last nine years at UNC Charlotte Continuing Education. Andy has developed and led numerous training programs for both nonprofit and public organizations, including sections of the PMP® Certification Prep Course for the Central Florida PMI® chapter as well as courses teaching Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project at Aon Hewitt. Andy is certified by PMI® as a Project Management Professional (PMP®) and is an active member of PMI®. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from The Ohio State University and a Master of Science degree in Management Information Systems from the University of Central Florida.

Leadership: Structure in Chaos (55 minutes)

  • Presentation: Leadership: structure in chaos (perhaps framed around being “voluntold” – a topic I would be happy to blog about)
  • Exercise: “Adapt”
  • Presentation: Correlations between success and quality & Summarized advice (research)
  • Q&A
  • Break (10 minutes)

Success Through Team Diversity and Conflict (50 minutes)

  • Presentation: Team Diversity (Informational diversity, Social category diversity, Value diversity)
  • Exercise: “Conflict”
  • Presentation: Team conflict “manifest disagreement among group members” & Project Success compared to Product, Service, or Result Success
  • Q&A
