Bio

Michael Chary, MD, PhD is a resident in Emergency Medicine at New York Hospital - Queens. During his PhD he analyzed how cocaine changed the (rat) brain’s capacity for representing information. Mike always liked languages more than rats, but that’s how he learned Python. He now uses computational linguistics and applied mathematics to analyze social media for public health research. He and Nicholas Genes founded the research group, ToxTweet, which was the first to demonstrate that the geographic distribution of recreational drug use could be accurately estimated from Twitter and the dosage, and signs and symptoms of opioid overdose inferred from YouTube comments.
