Ignite Launches Weekly Video Series Highlighting the Best of Geek Culture--O'Reilly Media Alert

February 19, 2009

Sebastopol, CA—"Enlighten us, but make it quick" is the slogan of Ignite--a community event celebrating the passion and creativity of geek culture, sponsored by O'Reilly Media. Ignite events showcase a series of speakers who, in rapid succession, give five-minute talks on whatever ignites their passion.

The format is half the fun with Ignite--speakers are allowed 20 slides that auto-forward every 15 seconds, whether they're ready or not. Organized by volunteers in the local geek community and presented free of charge to their communities, Ignite talks range from "How to Buy a Car" to "Hacking Chocolate" to "Transhuman Technology Trends."

With today's launch of The Ignite Show, the best Ignite sessions from around the world will now available online. The first episode of this new weekly video series, originally performed at Ignite Portland and recorded live at Ignite NYC 2, features Jason Grigsby on "Cup Noodle: Innovation, Inspiration, and Manga." In exactly five minutes, Grigsby shares insights on creativity, project management, and leadership, drawn from the story of how that ubiquitous packaged soup revolutionized the food industry. The Ignite Show is available weekly on the Ignite YouTube channel and ignite.oreilly.com/show.html, and will soon be available in iTunes.

Created by Brady Forrest, Technology Evangelist for O'Reilly Media, and Bre Pettis of NYC Resistor, Ignite was inspired by Pecha Kucha. The first Ignite took place in Seattle in 2006. What began at a bar in Seattle has now spread around the world, with active communities in Bangalore, India; Paris, France; New York, New York; Portland, Oregon; and many other locations. More than 20 Ignite events are scheduled over the next three months.
