Overview
Every new technology era brings with it new programming practices—but also new infrastructure that needs to be understood to get the most out of them. So it goes with AI: It could optimize operations but only if our infrastructure evolves to meet the challenge.
Technologist Sam Newman has been thinking deeply about infrastructure and ops for decades, and through his writing and teaching, he’s shared much of that expertise directly with the O’Reilly community. Sam’s the author of the bestsellers Building Microservices and Monolith to Microservices, a prolific instructor (his course Microservice Security is coming up September 22), and the longtime host of O’Reilly’s Infrastructure & Ops Superstream. So there’s no one better to help us dig into how AI will expand (and challenge) our technology systems.
Sam joins me for this episode of Live with Tim O’Reilly to highlight some of the larger trends in infrastructure and ops today. But first, he’ll give us a recap of the recent Superstream on AI-driven operations and observability, sharing the insights about AIOps he found most useful for operations folks tackling increasingly demanding AI and ML workloads. He’ll also fill us in on what he’s cooking up this fall, including an O’Reilly Katas event series and a new book, Building Resilient Distributed Systems (coming in 2026 but now in early release on the learning platform). And of course, we’ll take your questions about infrastructure, operations, and whatever other intriguing topics happen to emerge from our conversation.
Recommended prep or follow-up:
- Read Building Resilient Distributed Systems (early release book)
- Read Building Microservices, second edition (book)
