Just after item 3.

If a reader is brand-new to Windows 8.1, and is following the instructions to open Narrator to try out the two options, it would be nice to tell the new learner how to quit or exit Narrator after turning it on. It was only through trial and error that I discovered I could turn off the irritating Narrator by pressing the Windows key and Enter. I found this by sheer luck in an article online. The book's Index was no help at all.

2nd paragraph

In describing how to see the expanded app list, it says "To see it, swipe downward on the Start screen," whereas on my device (a Surface Pro 3) swiping downward doesn't do anything, but swiping UPWARD works.

"If you're looking at a photo, the options might include Mail or SkyDrive"

SkyDrive is now called OneDrive.

Last line of "Up to Speed"

The line reads "Touchscreen: Hold ... until it bugles. " Bugles? What does it play? (I can't check because I don't have a Touchscreen...) I rather suspect that there might be a typo here and the intention was to say "...bulges". If I'm wrong, then I've bungled (: but if I'm right, then you've bungled:)

Swiping down from the top (using a mouse) closes the news application and does not open the news source tile menu on my pc. Right clicking and using the windows key +Z does work however.

The word "More" is not on the Privacy tab. The sentence should read "Select Settings, and a screen appears ...".

FIRST CORRECTION

Location 659: The tip says to press Windows Key +Q to search for settings. But +Q is Search (anywhere), not settings. +W is for settings.

SECOND CORRECTION (?)

Location 356: "Windows Key +Q, +F, +W, open the search pane to search for programs, files, and settings, respectively."

But in Locations 19226 and 19389 below, it says that +Q is for Search (anywhere). Locations 19226 and 19389 do not state in either TileWorld Shortcuts or Windows Key Shortcuts that +Q is to search for programs. So why in location 356 does it say that +Q is for programs while locations 19226 and 19389 say that its to Search anywhere?

Location 19226: TileWorld Shortcuts
Windows Key +Q: Search (anywhere)
Windows Key +F: Search for files
Windows Key +W: Search for Settings

Location 19389: Windows Key Shortcuts
Windows Key +Q or +S: Search (anywhere)
Windows Key +F: Search for files
Windows Key +W: Search for Settings

THIRD CORRECTION / SUGGESTION

Why in Location 19389 does it add +S for search anywhere, but in Location 356 only +Q, and not +S, is used to search anywhere? If +S is an additional way to search anywhere, shouldn't it say that in location 356? Is there a difference between +Q and +S?

Under the tip it says, " ... if you don't use the OneDrive.."

This reminds me of George Bush saying that he uses "The Google." It should read, " ... if you don't use OneDrive ..."

Fig 21-18

In the discussion on the Task Manager under Startup Items Revealed (as well as on p. 364) there are instructions for disabling startup items. At least on the version of Windows 8 that I have, the Disable button is shaded out and does not function for all but one of the 15 startup items listed. I receive frequent error messages that inform me that I have too many startup programs running and I need to disable some. I feel that there should be mention of the fact that some startups may not be able to be disabled, and/or a work around for disabling the ones that TM won't let me disable.

Last paragraph

Instruction is to turn on the computer with flash drive inserted. When a message tells you to "press any key" do so . . .
There is no message to "press any key." My new PC has a DVD drive and several USB ports.
Maybe the boot sequence needs to be changed. The book does not say anything about that.

Last paragraph

This is correction to the error I reported 2 days ago.
I reported that I do not see a message "press any key."
It turns out that on my new Dell computer there is no message.
Possibly the initial Dell splash screen hides it.
Anyway on my PC, when the Dell splash screen appears, I just press any key, even though there is no message. Then an onscreen instruction appears on how to access the boot menu. The rest of your instructions are fine, and the USB Recovery Drive works fine.

Suggestion: in this paragraph you might add a note that if the "press any key" message does not appear, check with your computer manufacturer for the method to access the start-up BIOS on your PC.

1st paragraph

It says that when the timer runs out "There's no notification, no sound..." When I use the timer I do get a sound which makes it much more useful. I'm using the Kindle version on a 23" screen. No page numbers just location numbers. Not sure if the paragraph is right.
