ePub About the Outline / Part 1

Kindle App on Mac version; no page numbers ☹.

This: "some of which are surprisingly useful for even for people without them.

Pogue, David (2014-11-05). iPhone: The Missing Manual (Kindle Location 147). O'Reilly Media. Kindle Edition. "

is amazingly clunky.

The last sentence of the page

It's written:
And the 6 Plus can capture regular video at 60 frames a second, giving video a creepily crisp, smooth, lifelike feel.
The iPhone 6 too (Compare iPhone Models page of Apple website).

I started reading using this book because, indeed, I missed a good manual with my new iPhone...
Right there, on the first few pages I encountered some confusing terms...
On the first few pages the function of the buttons is described, which is logical of course.
Three different verbs are being used with regard to using the buttons:
PRESSING,TAPPING and PUSHING are randomly distibuted over the sentences.
I disagree with using the verb TAPPING, since- in my opinion - this is a screen controlling feature, synonimous to TOUCHING
I would recommend resticting the usage of pressing, pushing - and if you like hitting - to the usage of buttons.
Tapping should be used for screen functions and the home button. The latter can be either PRESSED or TAPPED, summoning up different features, though.
Example: page 11: Answer call/Dump to voicemail paragraph:
Tap the sleep button once to silence the ringing or vibrating. If you just tap the button (as you would do on the sceen) nothing happens. You really have to press (or push) it...

4th paragraph

On the bottom of page 17, in describing the Home button, you use the terms "tap", "click", "touch", (and at the bottom of 18) "press". Seems very confusing when there are only two physical possibilities (I'd suggest standardizing on "touch" and "click" to avoid confusion). Presumably these four terms (and perhaps others) are used interchangeably throughout the book.

At the end of the first paragraph of 'Silencer Switch, Volume Keys'

It's written:
To turn off the ringer, push the flipper toward the back of the phone (see the photo on page 11).
Actually, the photo is on page 09.

On page 19, when discussing Silencer Switch the book refers the reader to:" ...(see the photo on page 11)". There is no photo located there.

Last paragraph, second sentence

It's written:
You can switch between battery readouts for the past 24 hours, or for the past 4 days.
Should be:
..., or for the past 7 days.

The second TIP:

It's written:
You can even open the Control Center from the Lock screen, unless
you’ve turned off that feature (page 14).

How to turn off that feature is described at page 15.

(For me, it is in plain French :-) )

Last paragraph

It says, "...specify how quickly the password is requested before locking someone out". Seems like confusing wording to describe a timeout period before the phone is locked, particularly when it is measured in minutes.

This is compounded in the 4th paragraph on the next page (52), where it is described as, "...if it is not within the window of repeat visits you established". How does "repeat visits" tie to how "quickly the password is requested"?

If I'm misinterpreting the wording on page 52, then I don't think the reference is clear.

Books says the "Require passcode" option lets you specify 1,15,30,60 or 210 minutes. My phone, brand new 6, and up to date, does not give me these options and the guy at the Verizon store says they do not exist.

Is he right or can we just not find them? My phone jumps from 5 minutes to "never"

Last paragraph, first bulleted list

It's written:
When you tap this key, it turns dark to indicate that it’s in effect.

But:
When you tap this key, it turns light (same color of letters keys) to indicate that it's in effect.....

Then, the Shift key returns in darker gray (normal state), meaning that the next letter will be lowercase

A missing illustration or image.

It says, "...replacing it with your substituted text, like this:"

The first Note:

Talking about emoticons included in messages, etc., it says, "These symbols show up fine on Apple machinery..."

Because the concern is not with you, the sender, seeing them, but the recipient, I suggest inserting the words "a recipient's" in the sentence, thus:

"These symbols show up fine on a recipient's Apple machinery, but generally don't appear on other kinds of phones."

9th paragraph-2nd Paragraph of "Phones are special"

lPrinted book says 'if you need to insert a pause ... type #, which inserts a 2-second pause" ...

That doesn't work. On an iPhone 6, you have to type press the +*# key, which then presents the word "pause" in place of the number 4 key. They pause shows in the phone number as a comma, e.g.
323-654-0778,,,7501, where there was a 6 second pause, before entering the extension 7501.

Great book, despite the error!

Last para

When you share a contact card how much information gets sent? For example, you usually do not want to share a person's birthday, or notes field which might contain security information like their alarm code(s) or passcodes. Could you confirm it just sends name, address, emails and not other info.

Tip:

The Missing Manual (page 500) states that the iTunes backup on a Win7 computer is located at:
C:Drive>Users>App Data>Roaming>Apple Computer>Mobile Sync>Backup.

The folder "Apple Computer" cannot be found on my computer.
Where can I locate the backup?

"By all means use choose Upgrade..." Eliminate "use"?

"...in which you have a decision to make." Perhaps "...in which case you..."? Actually the entire sentence seems to need rewriting...I'm unclear about what decision I would need to make.

right column

This errata could be called "The missing index of the missing manual".

Page 605 is in the index. That's where I looked to find out how Books "sync" on the iPhone. It isn't there under Books and it isn't there under sync either. Fortunately, it appears on page vii under the table of contents for chapter 14. But really, it belongs in the index.

So does lots of other stuff I've tried to look up, in particular to find anything about how photo resolution works in messaging, in particular whether there is any way to control the compression or resolution of a photo when you send it. Probably not. Oh well.

Because of this problem, I bought the ebook version but for the life of me I can't figure out how to download it to my computer. That's one of only several puzzling problems with the O'Reilly website. One of the others is poking around to find a page that lets me sign in.

Your corrected index has the same error on two different pages:
p.619 and p.624. Under "Read receipts" (p.619), the pages listed are p.570-569 (should be p.569-570). On page 624, same error under "Text messages; Read receipts".
