Also on the backside, the author writes 'Mac OS X', but that operating system is now called 'OS X'. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OS_X

The text indicates that Bash version 4.4 is the version on Mac OS X.
It is not.
Even the latest incarnation as macOS 10.12 still only uses
GNU bash, version 3.2.57(1)-release (x86_64-apple-darwin16)

Bash 3.2.57 and 4.4 are quite different to the point that some common shell scripts written for one will not work with the other without (minor but not obvious) modification.
