In this book, I erroneously use the following code to determine whether an object has been instantiated: if ((self == [ super initWithFrame: rect ]) != nil) { I later realized that this is incorrect. The proper way to do this is as follows: self = [ super initWithFrame: rect ]; if (nil != self) { Generally this does not present any problems, but is a good idea to change this in your projects, in the event that future versions are less forgiving.
