ePub Page Chapter 5 Create Year over Year Calculations
On creating ▲ and ▼

Several ideas to enhance the section: Automate Your KPIs.

1. On creating the calculated fields for Arrow Up and Arrow Down:
It may be easier to add the Alt Code 30 and 31 in the comment so readers can type these in.

2. Instead of creating two calculated fields, one each for Arrow up and Arrow Down, we can combine it into one:

// Type ALT key plus 30,31,223 on the numeric keypad for ▲ , ▼, ▀ symbol etc
IF [Sales Delta] > 0 then "▲"
ELSEIF [Sales Delta] = 0 THEN "▀"
ELSE "▼"
END

This way, the DIRECTION is automatically updated without need to manually intervene.

3. The use of a single page to house all 4 metrics might be fast, but the use of min(0.0) as columns interferes with Color legends. Ie. if Arrow Down, i want to show it in RED, and if Arrow UP, i want it to show up as GREEN, without the need for manual intervention. This is so, because the idea of the chapter is to "Automate YOUR KPIs".

Near Figure 7-12

In step 1 prior to figure 7-12, the instruction went straight to creating a calculated field named [% College Attainment]

I felt this is misleading. The first step is to LOAD the Aloft Educationsl Service US Student Attainment Extract (.hyper) file first. While this might be implied, people that missed doing this step would not be able to find the referenced [Total Population with Bachelor's Degree 25 years and over] field.

Chapter 7 near Figure 7-12

Figure 7-12 shows the main table as "US State Attainment", but the downloaded file from the website is an XLXS file by ANOTHER name: US Centsus by State.xlsx and the name of the sheet is not "US State Attainment" but " Sheet1"

The joined table is in .csv file format. I suggest that the filenames be mentioned for ease of readability and make it easier to follow the examples.

The authors missed a step. Since the files have different names for geographic area, there is a need to Edit Blend Relationships/ Custom and link Geographic Area with Geographic Area Name.

Figure 7-16

In loading the ZIP field by double clicking it, the map will not generate the expected dots on the US map. You see, I'm based in Singapore, and so when I doubled clicked the ZIP field, the country automatically fell back to Singapore, not US.

We will then get a 484 unknown points.
We will need to "EDIT locations" and set country to United states to fix this.

in the section: Using Set Actions to Drill Down and Filter Data: Digital Marketing Case Study

I loved learning this strategy! Here are some suggestions on how to make it easier to follow the steps:

1. The name of the file to load for the worksheet wasn't stated. Which of the 3 Sage files do we use for this worksheet? I am working with The Sage Geographic Marketing Results.csv file. But I also checked out the .hyper file and both have the same content. I hope this is correct. If so, may I suggest that the authors indicate this in the book? This helps a learner to quickly go through the steps faster.

2. In the create Custom Date Part, it would help the learner if we had a screenshot showing how exactly to do this: (in early chapters you showed how to create the custom date, day, week).

3. In the create worksheet action, it would also help to have a screenshot of the steps to do this. ie. Worksheet / Actions / Add Actions / Change Set Values

4. In the creation of the action, it would also help if the authors indicated that the "TARGET SET" needs to be set to the [Included Dates Set] for it to work.

5. The authors also forgot to mention that you need to drag the CLICKS field to the rows. Otherwise, the chart would never show the values!

6. The authors mentioned that the 'Title Date Part" should be dragged to the Details in the marks section. If we hover over the data points, I do see it change from weeks to days. But if we check the illustration, the title is displayed more like when this [Title Date Part] is dragged to the Columns.

7. finally for some unknown reason, when the MARKS is set to automatic, the weeks is shown as DOTS, instead of lines. The days are shown in lines correctly tho. So i had to change ithe Marks to BARS. so that both would display in the same way. I am not sure what i need to do to fixe the LINE not showing up.

ePub Page Chapter 3 - Compare with a Basic Bar Chart
Instruction 4

Instruction 4 says:
Add [Program] to Columns and [Avg Grant Amount] to Rows.

It should say:
Add [Budget Category] to Columns and [Avg Grant Amount] to Rows.

ePub Page Chapter 3 - Show Rank and Change of Rank on a Bar Chart
Throughout this section of Chapter 3

Figure 3-12 is correct, showing the Budget Categories sorted descending based on 2019 Grant Amounts, Rank, and Change from 2018.

However, Figures 3-18, 3-19, & 3-20 show the Change from 2019 opposite of what it should be.

Also, you do not show how to create the Calculated Fields [Grant Amount | 2019] and [Grant Amount | 2018].

ePub Page Chapter 3, Build a Parallel Coordinates Chart
Throughout this section of Chapter 3

In the Calculated Fields for %Margin | Windows Max and %Margin | Windows Min, the calculation uses SUM([Profit])/SUM([Profit]), when it should use SUM([Profit])/SUM([Sales]).

Also, in step 7 of this section, where you say "Set your table calculation to compute across Sub-Category", it would have been helpful to specify that this is done on each of the 4 Text Windows Max entries in the Marks. Without this info, I was attempting to set the table calculations for the 4 MIN(0.0) entries in the Columns.

Dashboard

The minimum values appear to be correct. However, the maximum values are not.

They should be:
Sales - $330.007 (from Phones);
Units - 5,974 (from Binders);
Margin - $55,618 (from Copiers);
% Margin - 44% (from Labels).

[Grant Amount | 2018] and [Grant Amount | 2019] should be added to columns shelf (instead of rows shelf)

The formula for % Margin | Window Max was:
Window_max(sum([Profit])/sum([Profit]))

I felt it should be:
Window_max(sum([Profit])/sum([Sales]))

the filter used First()=0: True

it may be easier to use subcategory | TF : true

this way, in the dashboard, the parallel header portion will update its figures when the parameter is changed.

The Chips and Bols Call Center Calls Extract.hyper loaded [start date time] as a string. We need to convert that to date/time format first.

There is already a field called [Extract(count)] that could replace the need to create the calculated field [Number of Records]

The chart was supposed to be the end result of the operation to change the path from line to step. This is not so. The chart still shows the path as a line.

[Call Reason] was listed as being added to COLUMNS.
In fact, [Call Reason] should be added to ROWs.

The authors suggest to 'disable selection for all of your layers' and later on work on the tooltip. But unfortunately, when you "Disable Selection" of a map layer, you also lose the ability to see the tooltips associated with the marks in the disabled layer as pointed at:
