Chapter 10. 3D Modeling: Advanced Techniques
3D modeling is essential for creating a digital version of real-world objects and spaces. It allows for accurate analysis, simulation, and visualization, which are important for architectural, scientific, or entertainment applications. As engineers and researchers, we always aim for precision and clarity in our 3D models. Traditional 3D modeling techniques in Chapter 4 may not work well with complex shapes or large point cloud datasets. Poor-quality 3D data representations can cause visual issues, incorrect simulations, and slow data processing, making it harder to get the best results.
In this chapter, we want to advance 3D modeling techniques. Let’s investigate solid solutions using Python through four distinct yet powerful approaches: high-fidelity meshing, voxelization techniques, parametric modeling, and image-based 3D modeling (see Figure 10-1).
Figure 10-1. Four essential 3D modeling approaches
This section explores the main techniques for making accurate, efficient, and beautiful 3D models. We learn how to improve mesh quality, create voxel-based models from point clouds, and use parametric modeling to better control geometry.
In the last section, we also look into image-based 3D reconstruction, which involves using AI models to estimate depth from single images and create 3D objects. This chapter is designed for hands-on exploration. ...
