9.1 Massive M2M Versus IoT
‘What is machine to machine (M2M)?’, ‘What is the Internet of Things (IoT)?’, ‘how do they relate to each other?’ are some of the commonly asked questions when it comes to machine type communication (MTC) and IoT. In this section, we will attempt to answer these questions in simple terms and also provide an overview. In simple terms, IoT refers to ‘anything and everything that is connected’, which includes machines and humans. M2M refers to ‘communication between devices using any communications channel, including wired and wireless’. In this sense, M2M is a subset of IoT.
IoT, as the name implies, can be considered more like an Internet‐like service, where a lot of cross‐cultural data and control points are available to a variety of applications or users. Consumers may use various parts of the data and control capabilities for their own purposes.
The classical M2M application is a remote measurement or control application with a dedicated purpose. Measurement and control operations can be performed at well‐defined control points, and the resulting data and control procedures are meaningful only within the application they are designed for.
