This chapter is a review of basic statistics. It begins with a discussion of the nature of data, variables, and statistical analysis. Then, in view of the fact that this book is mainly for a second course on statistics, the chapter proceeds with a few nonelementary items.
Data result from the observation of one or more variables. In the context of statistics, a variable represents a characteristic or property that can be observed or measured. Variables may may be observed on a number of occasions, or for a number of individuals (or for a number of individuals on a number of occasions).
