1. Introduction

This chapter explores economic growth. We approach growth primarily as a physical and biological phenomenon, with growth of economic value only playing a secondary role. In doing so, we tackle one of the most challenging economic issues of our times: So far, growth of economic value goes along with serious damage to the biosphere and future generations of humans.
